Eight Ways to Take Care of Yourself
Becoming a mom is an amazing experience but often times it can be extremely overwhelming. There are so many little things to do and remember and think about, that we often times forget to figure out ourselves. Sure, we make sure our kids are taken care of and getting everything they need, and we make sure the bills are paid and the house is clean, but we don't often think about ourselves. When was the last time you took a bubble bath? When was the last time you slept until 7:30 in the morning? When was the last time you indulged in a massage?
Exercise is an important part of taking care of yourself. It doesn't have to be anything strenuous, but it does have to be something. Even just walking around the block or doing a few yoga poses will do wonders for your body and mind. You'll feel more energized, more positive, and happier overall.
Taking a bath is a great way to relax and unwind. It's also very inexpensive. All you need is some Epsom salts and bubbles (here is a recipe for bath bombs) and you're good to go. Take your time, light candles or incense if you like, put on some music, and just enjoy yourself!
Have a hobby that is just for you, and do it regularly. Hobbies are a great way to unwind and relax after a long day at work or school. It doesn't matter what your hobby is (reading, knitting, etc), as long as it's something you enjoy doing and don't feel guilty about taking time out of your busy schedule to do it.
Watch your favorite show with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. There's nothing quite like watching your favorite show (especially if it's a feel-good one), and you can have as much wine as you want while doing so! S
Go for a walk outside. Fresh air is always good for the soul and makes you feel better physically and mentally. It's also a great way to get some exercise in, and you'll probably feel better when you're done.
Go out with friends and/or family. Sometimes it's nice to get out of the house and spend time with people who care about you. Go have lunch with your mom, go shopping with your best friend, or go out to eat with your significant other — whatever makes you feel good will be worth it!
Sleeping in is great too! (I find it hard to sleep in most times as a mom) but sometimes we need to rest! This is a great time for the mind to relax and unwind. It's also important to get enough sleep so that you're not tired all day, which can cause stress and anxiety.
Having some fun with the kids and just being silly is a great stress reliever. It's amazing how much fun you can have playing tag and hide-and-seek with your kids. I know what you're thinking: "But I don't have time for games!" But trust me, when you stop and play tag or hide-and-seek with your kids—just because it's fun—you'll feel so much better when they go off to school (or wherever) after an afternoon of running around like crazy people. Plus, it's a great way to reconnect with them and remind them how much fun it is being together as a family.
As important as it is to take care of others, you should also take the time to pay attention to your needs. You are your family's steady rock, and it's okay to need a break every now and then. Making yourself a priority can help you be the best parent and spouse you can be. So let some people in, find ways to laugh more often, and look forward to your future—because if you don't make it a priority, who will?
